Victim-blaming is a harmful attitude that suggests the victim of sexual violence is responsible for what happened to them. This can include questioning the victim’s actions, attire, or behaviour. Such attitudes perpetuate stigma and silence around sexual violence. It is crucial to focus on the perpetrator’s actions and hold them accountable rather than shifting blame to the victim.
Support for survivors should be unwavering, emphasising that the responsibility lies entirely with the perpetrator. Clothing, behaviour, and previous interactions are irrelevant when it comes to consent. No one asks to be assaulted, and suggesting otherwise only serves to excuse the perpetrator’s behaviour.
